The World Percussion Ensemble is under the direction of Assistant Professor Michael Compitello in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music, Dance and Theatre. The rhythms taught are drawn from the drumming cultures of Africa, the Middle East, India, the Caribbean and South America.

This class is a learning and a performing ensemble. As part of the Ethnomusicology program, the World Percussion Ensemble is taught through oral tradition although some written materials are made available from time to time. Students are encouraged to use their memory in retaining the rhythms, songs and folklore. Cultural information on the origins of the material accompanies the music being played, along with information on its historical development. By learning in the traditional way, students gain personal insights into the cultures and ethnic groups covered.

No prior music knowledge is required, merely a desire to understand the music of various cultures. You are graded on your willingness to learn, your attendance and your ability to reproduce the music taught through the semester. Class enrollment is open to the general campus community.
